The longest train in the world runs through the Sahara.

In 1963 the world longest train, the Mauritanian Train du Desert set off, which runs from the port of Nouadhibou ont he Atlantic coast tot he iron ore mines in Zouerat in the nort-west of the country.

Since 1963 the train has been transporting iron ore and the brave passengers for 704 kilometers across the desert.

The entire journey along Western Sahara takes about 20 hours and its total distance is 704 km. The 2 kilometer long train consists of three or four diesel locomotives, one passenger wagon and 200 coupled freight wagons. Each wagon can carry 84 tons of iron ore.
